Community Spotlight: The Hunger Project’s work to fight women’s food inequality

Food is a basic human need, yet today, 1 in 10 people (828,000,000) do not have enough food to eat. And hunger isn’t just about food. Hunger is linked to a plethora of issues including economic inequality, health, education, social justice, women’s rights and climate change.

Gender inequality and hunger

60% of the world's hungry people are women and girls. Women in poverty bare the primary responsibility for meeting the basic needs of the family and often invest significant proportions of their income in food, healthcare and education for their families - often going hungry themselves.

This inequality is present despite the fact that women in developing countries provide the majority of the agricultural labour. This is because gender discrimination limits a woman farmer’s access to various resources including agricultural inputs, credit services and markets to sell produce.

Plus, poor public health programmes contribute to the gender hunger inequality gap. Women need to eat more nutrient-rich foods during key periods in their lives, particularly during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Poor communication and lack of education can increase the likelihood of malnourishment in women, especially at these key periods of their lives.

What can be done?

The Hunger Project UK is working to make change happen by investing in people. Through their innovative approach to ending hunger, they empower communities to take control of their futures and create lasting change.

Their programmes provide education, agricultural and leadership training and health services to women and girls in rural communities across Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. They train women and men, equipping them with the skills, methods and knowledge needed to take self-reliant actions, to lead sustainable change in their communities to end hunger and poverty.

At the heart of The Hunger Project UK's approach is the belief that people are the key to ending hunger. By working with communities to build their capacity, creativity, and leadership, The Hunger Project UK is unleashing the potential of millions of people around the world.

But they can't do it alone. That's why they are committed to forging effective partnerships with local authorities and other organisations to create sustainable change. A world without hunger is possible, but it will take all of us working together to make it a reality.

The Hunger Project UK is doing their part, but they need your help. The Hunger Project UK needs people to invest, fundraise, campaign and volunteer.

Whether you’re able to invest time or money, act today to change lives tomorrow. Donate today or find out more at The Hunger Project UK.
