Can you help me?
Powerful and effective words.
This morning I listened to what I think is the most constructive, hopeful, practical, and powerful programme on climate change solutions.
I urge you to listen.
Half an hour, with a cuppa, to give you hope for a future that matters.
Sangita Myska asks “Can feeling the future propel policy makers and the public into solving the climate crisis?”
My ‘job’ and the purpose of UK for Good is simple; to create a cleaner, greener, fairer future.
To do that, I spend all of my time working hard to inspire, inform, and enable business leaders to better understand and improve their impact on their people, and on the planet.
In short, we help businesses grow successfully, and sustainably.
Sounds simple hey.
The inspiring bit comes naturally because I’m genuinely passionate about the work I do and absolutely determined to shape a better future for my children andfuture generations.
The really hard thing is sharing the facts.
Because the facts, particularly those relating to the Climate Emergency, are truly terrifying.
Recently, I’ve been advised by friends and contacts to ‘ease off’ on the gloom and doom.
And I get that.
The harsh reality is that the future looks grim and it feels as though we’re just not doing enough about that.
There is definitely a sense of doom barriers, or apocalypse inertia.
Many people have gone into a kind of ‘brace’ position.
They/we may feel that there really isn’t any point. The problem is too big, or too far away, to do anything about it.
So they don’t do anything.
My friend and UK for Good Advisory Board member Hilary Berg often talks about this concept of hyperbolic discounting.
The question posed by Sangita Myska hits the nail on the head: “Are we in such a state of fright that we have frozen?”
The solution: we need to motivate people beyond sharing facts.
As Carmody Grey says in her compelling podcast: “The Ethical Basis for Civil Resistance” – facts never motivated anybody to change.
So how can we help people visualise a future if we don’t do enough now to climate action…and alternatively the future we could have if we do?

An innovative solution comes from Anab Jain of Superflux, a creative studio that makes art installations and films that tackle big policy problems, especially climate change.
Her aim is to give decision-makers and the public a visceral experience of what the future could be like if they don’t act now – or the positive future we could have if they do.
This is definitely lightbulb moment territory for me.
We need to feel the future we’re facing and focus on solutions and collaboration…quickly, and effectively
